Did you feel it when you headed outside this morning?
That crispness that comes with Fall?

Yeah.

Me neither.

Today is officially the first day of fall. And I suppose somewhere in the world, it probably feels like fall. Just not in Oxford, Mississippi, on Sept. 22.

I don’t know about the rest of y’all, but I’m ready for some cooler weather — or at least something that resembles cooler weather. Maybe temperatures that don’t have heat indexes nearing triple digits.

Unfortunately, the chance of that happening does not appear likely for several more days The most recent forecast predicts temperatures running into the 90s through the weekend.

One of the things I looked forward to when I moved to Oxford just over a year ago was the thought that the weather actually changes. And it did last year.

But now I’m thinking it may have been an apparition.

Meanwhile, I will dream of golden leaves falling to the ground, caramel apples, pumpkin patches and corn mazes. Maybe by the time Halloween rolls around, high temperatures will get down into the 70s.

And don’t get me wrong. I love summer and warm weather, but it seems this summer has been incredibly hotter and lasted longer than most. I don’t expect the weather to be anything like New England in the fall. After all, we do live in Mississippi and hot temperatures are to be expected. But it would be nice to have a change in seasons in September rather than having to wait another month or so.

Just someone promise me that at some point before Thanksgiving at least, I can wake up and feel that brisk morning air.

I don’t want summer to jump right into winter when I’m scraping ice off the windshield the first thing in the morning to start my day.

To me, there is nothing like walking outside on that first morning when the temperature and humidity are both down in the bearable range.

That cool, crisp air in the morning  gives a sense of reinvigoration to me. Those long, hot days of summer are behind us and pretty soon my favorite holiday of the year — Thanksgiving — will soon be upon us.

In the meantime, prepare for more hot and humid, sticky weather the rest of this week.

Word is fall football weather is still a ways off and Saturday’s Ole Miss-Georgia football game at The Vaught will be another scorcher.

Dress and prepare accordingly and pray those cooler temperatures will be here sooner rather than later.
