Oxford much more than a football city

Football is often the center of talk in fall in Oxford, but the community is so much more than a football city.

Take this week as an example. This evening at 7 p.m. at Nutt Auditorium on the Ole Miss campus a public program features the words and music of conservationist and philanthropist David Rockefeller Jr. and longtime friend and pianist Bruce Levingston.

The duo is teaming up on stage for a rare program that would seemingly be held in New York, not Oxford. But that’s becoming more the norm in the city and on the Ole Miss campus these days.

Similarly, on Friday evening at 7, a public program at Nutt Auditorium on campus will feature a discussion on presidential politics with a heavy-hitting lineup. Participants include Tom Brokaw, longtime NBC correspondent and former “NBC Nightly News” anchor; Andy Lack, president of NBC News; and political notables Barbour and Harold Ford Jr., former Democratic congressman from Memphis.

These are just a sampling of this week’s community events, which includes the popular Thacker Mountain Radio and so much more. And yes, on Saturday, 64,000 will attend a football game on campus.

But Oxford is more than a football city. On any given week there are multiple world-class opportunities for learning and culture that make the community a great place to live.
