WATER VALLEY — The Blue Devils of Water Valley faced a tough Charleston Tigers team that was coming off a rough loss against Lafayette High School a week prior. The Tigers took control early and didn’t let up, securing a 51-6 victory over Water Valley. The Blue Devils (1-6, 0-1 Region 2-3A) are on a losing streak, this being their fifth in a row.

A disappointed Water Valley Head Coach, Brad Embry didn’t have much to say after their fourth consecutive loss of over 30 points. “They are a really good team. We have a lot to work on. We saw they were good on film and they have a really good secondary. Their defense scored just as many points as their offense so there’s not much you can do when that happens.”

Charleston’s defense did not score as many points but multiple turnovers, including a fumble returned for a touchdown in the second quarter and an interception returned for a touchdown in the third, proved that the excellent play from the Tiger defense led to multiple easy scores from their offense.

Not only did the Tiger defense play well but offensively also with Fred Hervey breaking free for two runs of over 50 yards, one coming on the third play of the game. It wasn’t long until Charleston had the ball back and we’re moving the ball down the field for another touchdown, this one a 15 yard run from running back Billy Kimble. Charleston (5-2, 1-0) would score three touchdowns in the second quarter, giving them a 44-0 lead at halftime.

With a running clock in the second half, the younger players on both teams got their chance to shine. One player in particular managed to proved himself in a game that was coming to a close quickly. Damicah Hervey was a man a mission to put up points on the Blue Devil’s side of the scoreboard. With two minutes left in the game, Hervey scampered his way in for a 13-yard touchdown, capping off a drive in which he had carried the offense downfield. Other than that, the Blue Devil offense turned the ball over the entire game and never got their offense rolling. The second half was no different other than Hervey doing a great job cutting and keeping the plays alive. On a team where all hope was lost, Hervey was a great sight to see for the future of the Blue Devils.

Embry believed his team stuck to the game plan but Charleston simply had their number. “They are a great team and we aren’t. We knew they were good team and we tried to stick to the gameplay but there’s wasn’t much we could do. We are going watch film to get back to work next week.”

The Blue Devils fall to 1-6 while the Charleston Tigers improve to 5-2. Water Valley travels to Independence next week to play in a pink-out game, which is raising awareness for breast cancer.
