Oxford has been busy with home Ole Miss football games for four straight Saturdays, but now we get a breather to do something different for a change.

Fortunately, one good option is a new race on the Ole Miss campus, the inaugural Great 38.

A 5K and 8-mile run that begins at 7:30 a.m. this Saturday in front of Ole Miss’ Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, the race is called the Great 38 in honor of the late Ole Miss football player Chucky Mullins.

Sponsored by Run Oxford, the first-year race already has hundreds of runners signed up and registration remains open. The race benefits the Chucky Mullins Foundation, which assists Ole Miss students with a disability or exceptional financial need.

Runners in the Great 38 will finish in Vaught-Hemingway Stadium and see themselves on the big scoreboard. So, even though there is no home Ole Miss football game this Saturday, the venue will still deliver champions.

We commend Ole Miss Athletics, Run Oxford and other sponsors of this inaugural race for seizing the moment of an open Ole Miss football weekend to create what will without a doubt become a signature fall event in Oxford.

So even if you don’t run in the race, come out to cheer on those running for a good cause.
