OXFORD — Joseph P. Gilbert, 83, passed on October 17, 2016, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi. A celebration of life will be held in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky. The family is being assisted by Browning Funeral Home in Pontotoc.

He served his country while stationed at Fort Myers, Washington, DC in the U.S. Army and received an honorable discharge from Headquarters Company of the 1st Battalion Group 3rd Infantry (The Old Guard). A career teacher in the New Albany-Floyd County Consolidated School District in New Albany, Indiana, he retired to Palm Springs, California before relocating in Oxford.
