All-American Drive will be temporarily shut down

Traveling around campus will become a bit of a challenge after winter break when All-American Drive is closed to allow room for the construction of the university’s new STEM building.

Mark Harris, director of parking and transportation and Oxford University Transit board member, told the OUT board Wednesday that the road closure will require some route changes for the bus system.

The road will be closed during the entire spring semester.

“We will allow delivery and service vehicles to go through,” Harris said Wednesday at the OUT regular meeting.

Harris said the university tried to avoid closing the road but that bids to construct the new STEM building were “astronomical” if the road wasn’t closed.

“The entire street has to be torn up to do the utility package for the building so there was really no another way around it,” he said. “We have to get this right. There’re so many utilities needed for that building.”

The road closure will affect the Yellow and Green routes. Students using those routes will be dropped off at two locations, the Student Union or the Kennon Observatory.

The road will be closed from University Avenue to Hill Drive. The parking lots on the south side of All American Drive will be accessible off Gertrude Ford Way. The Pavilion will be accessible off Hill Drive.

Harris said information about the street closure will be given to all students before they leave for winter break.

In other business, the bus ridership numbers continue to climb. In October, 198,963 people rode the bus compared to 195,173 in October 2015.
