Thacker Mountain Radio Hour will host their fourth annual Membership Holiday Party on Friday, Dec. 2 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Southside Gallery at 150 Courthouse Square.

The event will feature the rocking house band, The Yalobushwhackers, signature cocktails, and a silent auction. Numerous items will be up for auction but the item expected to be the most sought after is the third annual Ghost Tour of Oxford.

Thacker Mountain board member, Kaye Bryant, grew up in this town and was the mastermind behind The Ghost Tour auction item. The idea originated from her love of hearing ghost stories as a child. As the friend of Miss Estelle, William Faulkner’s granddaughter, Bryant was fortunate enough to spend her childhood visiting the Faulkner’s home and listening to her friend’s ‘Pappy,’ also known as William Faulkner, tell tales of ghosts.

“I always loved to share that experience with people visiting Oxford,” Bryant said. “So I had an idea of The Ghost Tour as an item for the silent auction. It has exceeded my fondest hopes.”

Larry Wells is one of the hosts of the Ghost Tour’s haunted stops. Wells resides in the home of William Faulkner’s parents, Murry and Maud Falkner. Wells was the husband of the late Dean Faulkner, the only niece of William Faulkner and the granddaughter of Murry and Maud.

“The Faulkner ghost stories which I relate on the tour originated with my wife Dean. [They are] either stories that she heard from her grandmother Maud Falkner, or, in a couple of instances, “ghostly” phenomena that Dean personally encountered,” Wells explains.

Though some may question the truth in these stories, Wells confidently shares that “The Faulkners believed in ghosts.”

Judy Riddell was the winner of the first Ghost Tour. She and 20 friends were the first to climb to the top of the Double Decker bus and listen to stories of Old Oxford along the way.

“We especially enjoyed our stop at Larry Wells’ home,” Riddell said, “where he recounted stories of family members smelling Pappy’s pipe smoke long after his death. The amount of effort by the volunteers and hosts was evident and made for a truly delightful evening.”

Stories of the supernatural happenings, combined with signature cocktails and snacks at each stop create the perfect setting to allow out of town guests, or even the Oxford native, experience Oxford in an entirely unique and eerie way.

“On a dark night atop the Double Decker Bus oiled with cocktails and scary stories, a good time was had by all,” Bryant said.

This item is available for groups of up to 23 friends on the night of March 25th, 2017. You may bid as a group but only one person’s name will go on the bid sheet. The minimum bid is $1,800 and includes a cocktail and a tasty snack at each stop. You will take the Double Decker Bus to visit the four homes and hear the stories of ghosts that still walk those rooms.

The stops include some of Oxford’s most notable homes including Mother Annie Brown’s on 910 Buchanan Ave., Miss Maud Faulkner’s home on 510 South Lamar, William Faulkner’s Rowan Oak home on Old Taylor Road, and Cedar Oaks on 601 Murray St.
