Severe thunderstorms that produced several tornadoes throughout the South Tuesday night narrowly missed Lafayette County.

While a good amount of rain, about 2 inches, fell during the storms, Lafayette County Emergency Management Director Steve Quarles said other than a few downed tree limbs and trees, no major damage was reported in the county.

Oxford Emergency Management Coordinator Jimmy Allgood also said there was no wind damage reported inside the city limits.

The National Weather Service said the storms produced about six possible tornadoes in Rankin, Scott, Leake, Winston, Noxubee and Oktibbeha counties.

After this round of bad weather, more seasonal temperatures will settle in over the state, with highs in the lower 50s under sunny skies and lows in the mid-30s for most of the week until a 50 percent chance of rain returns on Saturday.

Despite the heavy rains, the Lafayette County Fire Department reminds all Oxford and Lafayette County residents a burn ban is still in place and no outdoor burning is allowed.
