The Ole Miss women’s basketball team put up a fight Sunday but didn’t have enough against the first ranked team it’s faced this season.

The Rebels fell 66-61 at No. 16 West Virginia. Taylor Manuel led Ole Miss (6-2) with 13 points while Erika Sisk added 11. Kristina King paced West Virginia (9-0) with 16 points and a career-high nine rebounds.

It was a one-possession game with 2 minutes, 17 seconds left after a layup from Manuel cut West Virginia’s lead to 57-54, but the Rebels missed their next two shots and didn’t get any closer. Ole Miss’ leading scorers coming in, Madinah Muhammad (14.7 points per game) and Shandricka Sessom (14.3), combined for just 13 points.

Alexis Brewer and Tynice Martin added 12 and 10 points, respectively, for West Virginia.

West Virginia’s biggest lead was 11 with 3:44 left in the second quarter, but Ole Miss leaned on its defense to stay close. The Rebels held West Virginia to 18 percent shooting (2 of 11) from 3-point range and forced 25 turnovers but scored just nine points off of them.

Ole Miss shot just 32 percent from the floor and 36 percent (4 of 11) from beyond the arc. West Virginia also controlled the glass, finishing plus-10 (40-30) in rebounding.

West Virginia led 26-20 at halftime. Ole Miss scored just eight points in the first quarter.
