Computer glitch sends out two electric bills

Some customers of North East Mississippi Electric Power Association were seeing double this month when a computer glitch sent out two bills.
Several people posted about the issue on the Oxford EAGLE Facebook page looking for answers.
One customer said she received two bills, one on Friday and another on Monday for an extra $1.60. She was concerned she would be charged interest if it wasn’t paid by Dec. 20, as the bills state.
Similar comments followed, each saying they received second bills for with extra charges ranging from $.75 to $1.60.
According to a statement from NEMEPA on Wednesday, those customers who have a bill due date of Dec. 20 were the ones who received the two bills.
Keith Hayward, executive director and CEO for NEMEPA said the first set of bills were generated before the fuel cost was changed.
“We caught the error before the bills were mailed and called our processor to inform them of the error, then fixed the problem,” he explained Wednesday. “For some reason, our printing company who prints our bills sent out both sets of bills.”
Hayward said the second bill is the correct bill.
The due date has been extended to Dec. 22.
Those customers who have already paid their bill by the amount on the first mailing still have an amount in arrears, which means there is still an amount due. This difference will be added to next month’s bill and will show up as “REMAINING OUTSTANDING BALANCE.” However, the difference in the amount will not have a Forfeited Discount applied.
“If someone pays the first one, it will be OK and they will not get a penalty,” he said.
Hayward said the electric company became aware of the errors after several customers called NEMEPA.
