New Year’s Eve isn’t the biggest night in Oxford.

We’re a bit more on the lowdown after a busy, bustling fall with football game nights.

But New Year’s Eve is still a night of celebration and revelry for some, so the standard reminders of having designated drivers and avoiding the roadways later at night if possible remain in place.

And let’s add one more to the list: Be extra vigilant of where young people are, who young people are with, and what young people are doing. That’s because for many of us, New Year’s Eve is just a night in which the calendar changes. Young people often see it differently, however.

Young people are out of school on holiday, and the hype in social media and online often builds New Year’s Eve up as big party night. So their plans are often worth monitoring, since less experience can mean higher risk and more mistakes.

We have high hopes for 2017, and look forward to a rewarding year ahead. But we hope that everybody arrives there together, healthy and safe after a fun New Year’s Eve this weekend.
