Receivers coach Matt Lubick leaving Ole Miss for Baylor

Matt Lubick’s second stint at Ole Miss lasted less than two weeks.

Lubick, who was hired as the Rebels’ receivers coach on Dec. 23, has accepted a position as the offensive coordinator at Baylor. FootballScoop first reported the news while Fox Sports reported Lubick is receiving a two-year deal to be the Bears’ playcaller.

Lubick signed a term sheet upon being hired but had not signed a contract with Ole Miss, athletic director Ross Bjork said. Since Lubick left for a coordinator position rather than another job coaching receivers, he does not have to pay Ole Miss a buyout, Bjork added.

Lubick was hired at Ole Miss to replace Grant Heard, who’s leaving after five years on head coach Hugh Freeze’s staff to coach Indiana’s receivers for former Ole Miss assistant Tom Allen. Now Freeze is left to find another coach to complete his staff after officially tabbing North Carolina defensive line coach Tray Scott, a graduate assistant under Freeze in 2012, to coach the same position at Ole Miss.

Only four assistants on this year’s staff — offensive line coach Matt Luke, running backs coach Derrick Nix, tight ends coach Maurice Harris and cornerbacks coach Jason Jones — will return following a 5-7 season, the first losing season of Freeze’s tenure. Wesley McGriff replaced the retired Dave Wommack as defensive coordinator while Phil Longo was tabbed as the offensive coordinator after Dan Werner was fired. Former LSU assistant Bradley Dale Peveto will coach linebackers and special teams.

Bjork said Ole Miss’ four new assistants are expected to sign their contracts later this week.

Lubick, who worked with Freeze on Ed Orgeron’s staff as the Rebels’ receivers coach from 2005-06, spent this season as Oregon’s offensive coordinator before head coach Mark Helfrich and his staff were let go following a 4-8 season. The Ducks’ offense was a bright spot under Lubick, ranking 18th nationally in total offense (491.7 yards per game), 28th in rushing (226.4), 29th in scoring (35.4 points per game) and 33rd in passing (265.3) this season.
