Sore throats, stuffy noses and body aches are some of the maladies that await you this flu season if you’re unfortunate enough to get infected with the virus.

The good news? It’s never too late to get a flu shot.

According to Dr. Jason Waller, Medical Director of the Emergency Room at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi, flu season lasts from around late October and sometime doesn’t ease up till March.

“The extremes of age are most susceptible to (the flu),” said Waller. “The really young or the elderly, those over 65 are definitely at high risk. And of course people that have other conditions like asthma or chronic lung disease are prone to being more affected by it.”

Many locations around Oxford offer flu shots from walk-in clinics to pharmacies.

“(I recommend) people get them anywhere they can get them,” Waller added. “A lot of employers offer the flu shot.”

As with any vaccination, getting one doesn’t guarantee full prevention from the virus.

“When they develop the vaccine, they’re trying to predict the virus that will be the most prevalent strain that year,” he said.

And since there are two months till this year’s strain winds down, be sure to get vaccinated and keep yourself healthy.
