Getting ed formula right crucial

Few things are ever as good as they can be when rushed.

And that’s our concern with a plan by Mississippi’s political leaders to rewrite the education funding formula this 2017 session.

EdBuild, the consulting firm hired to make recommendations for a new funding plan for Mississippi’s public schools, is supposed to submit a new formula for review later this month.

Legislative leaders, including Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves, plan to take those recommendations and rewrite the education funding formula during this legislative session.

The plan to assess and address Mississippi’s education funding formula is a fine idea. Lawmakers have only fully funded the current formula two times since it was made a law in 1997, and Mississippi needs to make sure its limited dollars yield the highest return.

We’re just concerned that a new plan won’t have time for proper assessment and vetting if EdBuild’s recommendations don’t come until late January with the session scheduled to end April 2.

Consider that it has been almost 20 years since the last plan was put in place. This next one will likely last just as long, if not longer.

So getting it right is critically important.

Mississippi’s future depends on it.
