St. John’s Catholic Church has a problem, but it’s one that most churches would gladly take on.

Due to growth in its congregation, the church needs more room.

The Oxford Planning Commission approved a site plan Monday that will help the church grow.

The church is proposing to expand the northern portion of the main church that will be 26 feet in depth and about 87 feet in width, which is the current width of the existing building.

The entrance will remain in the same location, and there will be no modifications to the existing entrance and exit.

The extra space will allow for 10 more rows of pews and enlarged restroom facilities.

The church did not ask or plan for additional parking spaces since the church received permission from the University of Mississippi to use the parking lot at the Gertrude Ford Performing Arts Center for Sunday services.

“It’s a good problem to have,” said Commission Chair Darryail Whittington.

The plan was approved by the Oxford Historic Preservation Commission in July.
