It’s a shame that on the day we celebrate the life and legacy of the greatest civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., president-elect Donald Trump engaged in a Twitter war of words with a civil rights pioneer.

Rather than focusing on King’s words, which encouraged and hoped for understanding and living together harmoniously as Americans, we have leaders in power who seem more focused on divisiveness.

In case you missed it, President-elect Donald Trump took to Twitter to lash out at Congressman John Lewis, a civil rights icon, in response to his comments on Trump’s election not being legitimate. The incoming president tweeted Saturday that Lewis should pay more attention to his “crime-ridden” Atlanta-area district, adding that the civil rights leader was “all talk.”

Such actions do little to encourage unity as Trump prepares to take the oath of office this week. In fact, it does nothing more than create more division in a nation that seems to be more polarized than ever when it comes to race relations.

We, however, hope and encourage everyone to live by the words of Dr. King today. Reach out a hand to your fellow neighbor and lift them up rather than focusing on the words of leaders who seem to want to divide us.
