Pop-Up Oxford gets underway today for week of events

Pop-Up Oxford, a new week planned with events and activities to encourage tourism during the winter, is set to debut today.

The “Hotel Hop” to kick off the week today is already sold out giving a promising sign of a positive reception to the rest of the events to come this week. The Hop consists of a shuttle taking passengers around various hotels for a food and drink tasting. The participating businesses include the Chancellor’s House, the Courtyard Marriott, the Inn at Ole Miss and the Graduate.

Tomorrow night at 7 p.m., filming will take place at the University Museum for “A Century of Quilts: America in Cloth,” a PBS documentary about the 100 best quilts of the 20th century.

On Tuesday evening from 5 to 6:30 p.m., the Oxford Art Crawl will wind its way around galleries including the Southside Gallery, the University Museum and the Powerhouse. At 7:30 p.m., “In The Mood: A 1940’s Musical Revue” will take the stage at the Ford Center. There will be a pre-reception for it as well an hour before show time.

The Oxford Conference Center will host a screening of several films on Wednesday evening beginning at 5 p.m. After “Sorry We’re Open,”,“Smoke and Ears” and “Eat or We Both Starve” finish up, there will be a talk back session with Ron Shapiro, Joe York, Alan Arrivee and John T Edge about Oxford and how it’s changing.

The Fiber Arts Festival begins on Thursday from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Powerhouse. 17 vendors from nine states will be on hand selling fiber related products. 28 classes will also be offered during the two day period of the festival.

Also on Thursday evening, Thacker Mountain Radio will be broadcasting from Off Square Books at 6 p.m. featuring guest authors Tim Gautreaux and Diane Williams.

On Friday morning at 8:45 a.m., The Fiber Arts Festival will be having a breakfast with Diane Williams of the Mississippi Arts Commission and the market will be operating from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.

The final day of Pop Up Oxford brings the last market hours for the Fiber Arts Festival from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Additionally, from 1 to 4 p.m., there will be a TEDx conference taking place in the Ford Center. TEDx is a lecture series in which a handful of speakers will be giving brief, illuminating speeches on various topics. At 5 p.m., Ole Miss Men’s Basketball will be taking on Baylor University in the Pavilion.

Throughout the week, Shop Up Oxford will be offering special deals at 33 locales around town. The discounts will be contingent on presenting a postcard that can be obtained at any Pop Up event.
