Mike Bianco sending a message

Ole Miss head baseball coach Mike Bianco has shown since 2001 that he runs a top-notch program and adherence to team rules and expectations comes first.

That’s why we’re not surprised that early in a season with so much promise like this 2017 Rebel team has that Bianco wasn’t afraid to suspend two of the team’s stars, Colby Bortles and Tate Blackman.

Bianco only said in a statement that Bortles and Blackman are suspended indefinitely because they are not meeting team standards. What exactly that means is between the coaching staff and the players.

But considering Bortles and Blackman are team captains this year, and two of the more senior players on a young squad, the suspension speaks loudly that Bianco means business in running his program.

Ole Miss returned home Tuesday for a long home stand that begins against Georgia State and continues into hosting nationally ranked Vanderbilt in a week-and-a-half.

Bianco will determine how long these players are suspended, but we applaud him for running the program according to his standards, even if it means sacrificing some wins in the short term.

That’s what good coaching, especially when it involves young people, is all about.
