Oxford Police Department district on Square is right move

The move by Oxford Police to make the city’s Square one of its patrol districts is a subtle but meaningful move.

Oxford Police already maintain a steady and strong presence at the Square, the center of Oxford’s entertainment and visitor activity. Most Thursday through Saturday nights, when Ole Miss is in session, Oxford Police have between eight and 12 officers working the Square.

But the Square has been organized as part of another police district, meaning that Oxford Police have had to juggle schedules and focus on other parts of the city while on duty if assigned to that district.

A new decision to make the Oxford Square its own district, with officers working from the city’s RSVP building, will provide a clear and meaningful presence for all stakeholders.

Keeping Oxford’s Square a safe and comfortable place for visitors, shoppers and diners is vital to the city’s culture and future.

Having a more permanent presence to work from, and making a clear statement of commitment to patrolling and serving the busy Oxford Square, is a move in the right direction.

We appreciate the forward thinking of Oxford Police and the service they provide to the community.
