Household hazardous waste collected locally

Oxford and Lafayette County residents took advantage of disposing of common household hazardous waste during Three Rivers Solid Waste Management Authority’s annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day Saturday.

Free of charge, residents brought various items to discard, from cans of old paint to car batteries that were dropped off in the parking lot of the National Guard Armory next to the Oxford Conference Center and disposed of properly.

The event is held annually to keep hazardous household waste from ending up in landfills or other parts of the normal waste stream.

In previous years, more than 600 vehicles pulled up with their household waste and  dropped off items that included everything from TVs to swimming pool chemicals.

The waste is organized and given to vendors who turn around and recycle the items.

The event was also sponsored by the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality, Three Rivers Planning & Development, and the city of Oxford-Lafayette County waste connections.
