We have one more round to go in the City of Oxford elections, with the general vote scheduled for June 6, but two contested seats were decided Tuesday in the primary and our congratulations go out to the winners, including Rick Addy (Ward 1) and Preston Taylor (Ward 5).

Both Addy and Taylor are Oxford natives, and are assets to the city’s board, so having them back for the upcoming four-year term as leaders is positive for the city.

They will be challenged during the term, there’s no denying that. Oxford’s growth, and corresponding infrastructure needs, will dominate the agenda and work for city leaders outside of meetings. But both Addy and Taylor have good understandings of how important quality of life initiatives are in the city, including sidewalks, good schools, and planning.

Tuesday’s primary leaves just two more races to be decided before the final lineup is set for our leadership in the city’s 2017 class. With mayor-elect Robyn Tannehill uncontested, voters on June 6 will elect either Republican Mark Huelse or Democrat Paula Shanks from Ward 2 as their alderman, and Ward 6 voters will decide between Republican incumbent Jason Bailey and Democrat candidate Wayne Andrews.

The aldermen in wards 3, 4 and At-Large aldermen have no opposition.

We urge all registered voters in Oxford to make plans for casting a ballot in the June 6 general election.
