Lafayette County to provide building inspections for Abbeville

The Town of Abbeville will soon be using Lafayette County services to provide building inspections for new construction.

The Board of Supervisors adopted an inter-local agreement this week to provide building code inspection services for Abbeville.

Fees for the building code inspections that Abbeville collects will be transferred to the county to defer the cost.

Abbeville officials completed a comprehensive plan in 2015 and adopted zoning regulations last year, as well as the county’s current building code regulations. They will also use the county’s fee schedule.

County Building Inspector Joel Hollowell has told officials his office can handle the additional workload of providing building inspections in Abbeville.

In other matters:

Supervisors approved an order on state aid special complex bridge inspections for 2018-19. Most county bridge inspections are done by the county engineer, but some bridges that have pilings below the surface of water are contracted out since the county does not perform underwater inspections. According to County Engineer Larry Britt, the federal government has determined nine county bridges should have outside consultants inspect them.

Oasis Church of All Nations received preliminary and commercial site plan approval to develop and construct a new addiction recovery center on Highway 6.According to Hollowell, the facility has met all state regulations but will not be able to gain occupancy until it meets fire code regulations. The facility will assist teens in their addiction recovery efforts through hardcore discipleship and not through chemical dependency.

County employees will receive a two-day paid holiday during the Fourth of July weekend. Supervisors approved granting Monday, July 3 and Tuesday, July 4 as the holiday.

Chicory Market received preliminary and commercial site plan approval.

OM Rentals received a variance, as well as preliminary and final commercial site approval for construction for their new office on Anderson Road.
