The Mid-Town Farmers’ Market opens on Saturday and its vendors are offering a selection of early-season produce, baked goods, jams, flowers and other goodies.

The market hours will be from 7 to 11 a.m. Saturdays and 7 to noon on Wednesdays, which is a change from previous years when it was held 8 to 1 p.m. on Wednesdays.

“We will have 15 to 20 vendors,” said Aileen Bost, farmer and chairman of the Mid-Town Farmers’ Market Board of Directors. “We have such a great variety of products this year, lots of good stuff.”

Some of the vendors at the first market of the season include Bost Farms, Canebrake Farms, YaYa’s Yummys, Pontotoc Ridge Blueberry Farm, Katie’s Cupcakes, Native Son Farm and Yoknapatawpha Bottoms Farm. Early season crops featured Saturday will include kale, greens, potatoes, cucumbers, strawberries, onions, herbs, radishes, peas and spinach.

The Seed Tick Road band will perform at the market from 8 to 10 a.m.

The Lafayette County Master Gardeners will be setting up a table to answer questions and provide literature about gardening.

“They’re very knowledgeable and helpful,” Bost said.

Saturday morning is forecast to be sunny and a bit on the cool side with early morning temperatures expected to be in the 50s.

“We’ll have hot coffee there to help warm you up,” Bost said.

Throughout the season, the market will have children’s activities on the first Saturday of the month; however, this month, the children’s activities will be on May 12.

Volunteers are needed each Saturday during the market season to help a farmers’ market board member run the market tent. Those who would like to volunteer are asked to email volunteer coordinator and board member Betty Crouther at arpate@olemiss.edu.

The last market day will be Oct. 28.

The market is located in the parking lot of the Mid-Town Shopping Center on North Lamar Boulevard, about a half-mile from the Square.
