Oxford, Lafayette high school tennis at top of heap

A decade of dominance in anything is practically unheard of.

In high school sports, 10 consecutive state championships is extremely rare, yet that is what the Oxford High School tennis team has just achieved, claiming the 5A championship once again.

Teams from Oxford and Lafayette have won so many championships this year, from volleyball to football and now tennis, that we just about lose count. Truly, it has been a year of excellence in competition for our student athletes.

This championship from the tennis team is more delightful in that it was won in Oxford, at FNC’s John Leslie Courts.  The city, of course, invested in building a best-in-class public tennis facility and now we see it paying off, hosting state championships in recent years in addition to other youth and adult tournaments.

Yes, Oxford has become quite the tennis town.

It will be interesting to watch next year when both Oxford and Lafayette move up a classification in athletics competition — the Chargers move to 6A while the Commodores move to 5A.

There’s no question the biggest wins will be harder to come by but we have a hunch that both Oxford and Lafayette will continue to shine in the competition, from tennis to volleyball to football and more.
