Oxford will have a new mayor soon, when Robyn Tannehill takes the oath of office in late June to become the city’s leader.

Change of political leadership often leads to questions but since Tannehill, 46, has worked in public roles before, beginning in jobs at the Oxford-Lafayette Chamber of Commerce and the Oxford Tourism Council, citizens have a good idea of what they can expect.

She will be an advocate for the city and will work with key partners including Lafayette County and the University of Mississippi to give Oxford its best opportunity for positive growth. And, she will give not be afraid speak her mind.

But it won’t be easy for the current Ward 2 city alderman. Serving on the board is not the same as leading from the mayor’s office. From that standpoint, everything that’s wrong in the city is your responsibility, but everything you want to accomplish takes four votes from the board.

This new era however comes at a good time since Tannehill can be an effective spokesperson for the city, representing Oxford’s values well, while also leading the city forward with effective growth management and vision.

She will take the city’s leadership role from current Mayor Pat Patterson, who decided not to seek re-election. We appreciate his service and the job he has done in recent months working with Tannehill for a smooth transition.
