Johnny Hill is getting what he deserves — induction into the Mississippi Association of Coaches Hall of Fame.

The Oxford resident and longtime football coach has long been destined for the distinction and we’re glad to see him honored for so many years of excellent service in coaching and teaching young people.

Hill, married to longtime elementary school teacher Linda Hill (she had an excellent career as well), coached some 41 seasons including many at Oxford High School, leading the Charger program from mediocrity to consistent winning.

But Hill’s contribution in coaching goes beyond the obvious, a 252-95 career record. He was known on the sidelines and in the classroom as a quality person with a good foundation that served as a valuable role model for the young men he coached.

He was known for his competitive streak, and for taking the game seriously, but these qualities made a difference in turning around the Oxford program, and they seeped into other programs as well, helping elevate OHS athletics.

We’re glad Coach Hill is getting what he deserves, induction into the state’s coaches hall of fame. And we are glad that in his long coaching career that he ultimately made Oxford his home.
