Ole Miss’ Gary Wunderlich named to Groza Award watch list

Another day, another Ole Miss player up for a college football award.

Gary Wunderlich was one of 30 kickers named to the watch list for the Lou Groza Award, which is given annually to the top placekicker at the Football Bowl Subdivision Level. Wunderlich, a senior, made 22 of 23 field goals last season, leading the nation with a 95.7-percent clip.

A native of Memphis, Wunderlich is vying to become the second Ole Miss player to ever win the award. Jonathan Nichols won the trophy in 2003.

Wunderlich is the fourth Ole Miss player in the last three days to be named to a watch list, joining quarterback Shea Patterson (Maxwell Award), defensive end Marquis Haynes (Bednarik Award) and center Sean Rawlings (Rimington Award).

He ranked fifth nationally last season with 1.83 field goals per game and 26th with 8.9 points per game. Wunderlich is third in school history in field goals (47), points scored (265) and extra points made (124).
