Contractors will have an opportunity Tuesday to ask questions or express opinions on a proposed ordinance that would require contractors to report any failed erosion control measures to the city and immediately fix the problem.

The second reading of the proposed ordinance and public hearing will be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall during the Oxford Board of Aldermen’s regular meeting.

If a contractor gets to a job site and sees one of the erosion control systems failed, like a silt fence that is supposed to catch the erosion, they must contact the Public Works Department and start correcting the problem as soon as it’s noticed.

While the contractor could face a fine for the erosion control system failing, they could face a second violation for not self-reporting the problem, according to city engineers.

Currently, the ordinance reads that if a failure is discovered a contractor has 48 hours to correct the issue.

The aldermen are not expected to vote on the ordinance Tuesday. Generally, aldermen will vote to change an ordinance on a third reading, which would be during their Aug. 15 meeting.

Also on Tuesday’s agenda is a former Oxford-Lafayette Humane Society board member who asked to address the aldermen in regards to concerns about the shelter and its executive board.

In July, several staff members resigned from their jobs, including the director and animal control officer. A statement from the shelter recognized the resignations but did not give a reason for the departures.

Mayor Robyn Tannehill said last month that a small group of people — who were not current board members — asked to be on the agenda to discuss the OLHS.

The city has no governing authority over the shelter; however, the city does contract with OLHS to provide animal control services.
