Sam Kendricks does it again — only this time, better.

Our local sports hero who starred at Oxford High School and Ole Miss in the pole vault and won a bronze medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics has won a world championship.

Kendricks, a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve, claimed his first world championship in the pole vault at the IAAF world championships in London. Competing for USA Track and Field, Kendricks edged out Piotr Lisek of Poland and 2012 London Games champion Renaud Lavillenie of France, claiming one of the biggest sporting victories ever for an Oxford resident.

He is scheduled to receive a gold medal for the accomplishment today in London and he expects it to be an emotional moment, naturally.

“I don’t know how I’m going to react,” he said.

We feel the very same way since we have watched Kendricks grow up in Oxford, learning how to scale new heights with the hardest of work on the local high school track for hours on end.

His victory shows that hard work does pay off since he has dedicated himself to becoming the best in the world with rare determination.

If it looks like destiny, it’s only because Kendricks went hard after this destiny.

Today, he will receive the gold medal for winning a world championship. It is something all of Oxford can celebrate together with its native son.
