Ole Miss soccer wins friendly at South Alabama

MOBILE, Ala. – The Rebel soccer team wrapped up its three-day trip to Mobile with a 1-0 victory over South Alabama in exhibition play Friday night.

Freshman Molly Martin scored the game winner with five minutes left in regulation, with Chanel Thomas and Alley Houghton providing the assists to seal the late victory. Overall, 18 different Rebels saw the field in the final competitive prep before next week’s regular season opener.

Ole Miss maintained possession in the first half, outshooting the Jaguars 12-5. From there, the Rebels held the home team well in check with 23 total shots to South Alabama’s five.

It was the 85th minute that saw the Rebels break through, when Martin capitalized on a series of nice passes in from the right side. Thomas sent a ball to Houghton, who crossed it in to Martin from the right side. She found space just in front of the net and flicked it in for the game winner.

Freshman Channing Foster and BYU transfer Ella Johnson accounted for 10 of the total shots with six and four, respectively. Goalkeeper Marnie Merritt posted two saves in goal for the Rebels.

Ole Miss officially opens the season Friday, Aug. 18, at 7 p.m. against Alabama State.
