Shaquita Curry had a vision a couple of years ago that she needed to do something to help the community and especially, the youngest residents.

“I decided the best way to give back was to have a Back to School Family Fun Day,” she said Wednesday. “I noticed there were a lot of children who need help right here in Oxford. I had to do something.”

Together with the help of about 30 businesses and individuals, the first Back to School Family Fun Day was held last August.

“I was able to bless over 200 children with a day of fun, which just made my heart smile,” she said. “See, when you do what God places on your heart and step out on faith, he will provide every step of the way.”

This year’s Family Fun Day will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Stone Park.

Activities will include bounce houses, face painting, adult Bingo, visits from local police and firefighters and games where children will win school supplies.

The event is for families with children of all ages.

“I believe this event will shine a positive light on the community and children by helping the parents in need of extra school supplies for their children,” Curry said.

Everything on Saturday will be free.

Curry’s Mobile Detail and several other businesses have given donations to help this event.

Local businesses will be setting up games and will have free giveaways for the children.

Many of the donations come from Rebel Rags, The Cakery, Four Seasons, Larson Cash Saver, B&H Inflatables, BimBam Burger, Subway, New York Fashion, Xclusive Cutz, Little Ceasers, Captain D’s, Insomnia Cookies, Blessed Hands, Lufern’s, Hermitage Garden, Windshield Magician and more.

“My goal each year is to help individuals along the way through guest speakers, fun and games, and fellowship,” Curry said. “This is one day set aside for you to come out with your family to enjoy a day of fun, and everything is free.”
