Oxford gas-station cook who always served Ed Orgeron chicken while at Ole Miss: ‘I still love him’

Ed Orgeron’s brief tenure as Ole Miss’ football coach didn’t go over well with many Ole Miss fans, but there are still those in Oxford who are fond of Orgeron.

That includes Phyllis, the cook at the Chevron gas station in town that used to serve fried chicken to Orgeron every weekend while he was the Rebels’ coach from 2005-07. Orgeron, who will make his first trip back to Oxford as an opposing head coach Saturday when No. 24 LSU takes on Ole Miss at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, referenced the gas station’s chicken-on-a-stick during his weekly press conference earlier this week, calling it “the best” he’s ever had (not including Raising Cane’s, he clarified).

“I still love him,” Phyllis told The Advocate’s Ross Dellenger, who visited the gas station Thursday.

Orgeron went 10-25 and won just three SEC games during his time as Ole Miss’ coach, so the fried chicken is likely his fondest memory of Oxford, too.
