5 killed on Mississippi roads during holiday weekend

The Mississippi Highway Patrol investigated five fatal wrecks over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend on Mississippi state roads and highways.

The enforcement period started at 6 p.m. Wednesday. During the enforcement period, MHP troopers issued a total of 4,879 citations with 46 arrests for DUI. They investigated 163 wrecks, which resulted in 55 injuries and five fatalities.

MHP observed heavy traffic throughout the period and anticipates the number of motorists traveling to increase due to the upcoming December holiday period.

In Troop E, which includes Lafayette County, troopers arrested three drivers for DUI and issued a total of 249 citations for various infractions. They investigated 31 wrecks; however, none were alcohol-related. There were no fatal wrecks in Lafayette County over the holiday weekend.
