Oxford’s representative in the Mississippi House of Representatives Jay Hughes is holding a Listen & Learn Town Hall meeting next week to give his constituents a chance to ask questions about the upcoming 2018 Legislative Session and give him a chance to hear what really matters to them.

“This is merely a chance to get to know the community better and listen to what’s important to them,” Hughes said Thursday. “Many in Jackson think we know what’s important and it’s often not what’s important to the people we represent.”

The open Town Hall meeting will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Oxford Conference Center.

Don’t expect anything fancy, however.

“It’s just me, a chair and a mic,” Hughes said.

Hughes said he will take questions and comments from the audience as to what their concerns are for Oxford, what might be coming up before the representative during the Legislative Session and their thoughts on subjects like taxes and education.

“My motto, is ‘It all starts with education,’” Hughes said. “That includes educating me on things that are going on in the community that I don’t get to see on a daily basis. I want them what more I can do.”

Hughes said he will discuss some of the bills he’s authored or sponsored that include the Public School Donation Tax Deduction and Dedicated Use; Noah’s Law – where no child under 18 can buy pure caffeine tablets; Education Enhancement Fund – that requires all sales tax collected from classroom supplies be given to classroom supplies; SSN protection – requiring only the last four digits of a Social Security number be used for Voter ID purposes; Eliminating sales tax on groceries; Lottery – dedicating it to public education, state and local roads and bridges; and Feminine Hygiene Products – making them tax free as several other states have done.

The Oxford Conference Center is located at 103 Ed Perry Boulevard, next to the National Guard Armory.
