No fatal wrecks were reported by local law enforcement during the New Year’s Eve holiday and only a few arrests for DUI.

The Oxford Police Department responded to seven wrecks and made five arrests for DUI during the weekend, down from seven during the same time frame in 2017.

Lafayette County Coroner Rocky Kennedy said there were no fatal wrecks reported in Lafayette County. The Sheriff’s Department made one arrest for DUI.

On Mississippi’s highways, the Mississippi Highway Patrol reported one fatal wreck across the state which occurred in Pontotoc.

The New Year’s holiday enforcement period began at 6 p.m. Friday and ended at midnight on Monday.

MHP issued 4,761 citations with 68 DUI arrests across the state. There were 119 wrecks.

The fatal wreck happened at 2:06 a.m. Monday on Highway 6 in Pontotoc. According to reports, Ladaja Q. Neely, 19, of Pontotoc was killed after her vehicle left the highway for unknown reasons and collided with a tree. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

In the Troop E area, which includes Lafayette County, troopers issued 338 citations with seven for DUI. They investigated 13 wrecks that resulted in no injuries.

“The MHP safety initiative ‘Making It Home For The Holidays,’ which ran from Dec. 22 through Jan. 1, was a huge success in regards to reducing injury and fatality crashes,” said MHP spokesman Capt. Johnny Poulos.
