James Major Coffey, 77, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018, at Baptist Memorial Hospital Union County. He was born March 14, 1940, in Etta, Miss., to James H. Coffey and Geraldine Bonds Coffey. He was a member of Philadelphia Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, church treasurer, choir member and director of the cemetery committee.

He was retired after 32 years of service as Computer Manager in the School of Pharmacy at The University of Mississippi. He was a member of Rocky Ford Masonic Lodge #185 where he was a past master mason, secretary and 32nd degree mason. He was a member of Rocky Ford Eastern Star Chapter #264 and was a past patron.

He served in the U. S. Army and was an E-4 specialist in the 108th Armored Calvary. He was a member of the American Legion, Potter Henry Lowery Post #72. He was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp #2271.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2018, at Philadelphia Baptist Church with Rev. Bobby Irvin officiating. Burial will be in Philadelphia Cemetery. United Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.

He is survived by his mother: Geraldine Bonds Coffey; his wife of 56 ½ years: Twanda Kirk Coffey; one daughter: Lyndie Coffey Scott (Dr. Brad Scott); one son: Marty Coffey (Jo Beth Coffey); two sisters: Janice Coffey Nolan (Paul Nolan) and Sherry Coffey Clayton (Mickey Clayton); six grandchildren: Haley Coffey Holt (Lee Allen Holt), Andrew Coffey (Alexandra Coffey), Molly Scott, Maggie Scott, Julianna Scott, and Harrison Scott; and two great-grandchildren: Myles Holt and Evan Holt.

He was preceded in death by his father: James H. Coffey.

Pallbearers will be Cris Wait, Jerry Bishop, Earl Johnson, Rayburn Azlin, Cary McCormick, and Sonny Goolsby. Honorary pallbearers will be Chad Nolan, Matt Nolan, Ryan Clayton, and Josh Hurt.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15, 2018, at United Funeral Service. There will be no visitation at the church prior to the service.

Memorials may be made to Philadelphia Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.

In honor of Mr. Coffey’s service to his country United Funeral Service will fly the U. S. Army flag during his visitation and service.
