Murray and Lucy Sutherland passed away just a few days apart at The Blake in Oxford, Miss.
Mrs. Sutherland, 86, passed away Thursday, Jan.11, 2018. She was a former nurse, but would want most to be remembered as a mother, wife and Sunday school teacher.
Mr. Sutherland, 89, passed away Monday, Jan. 15, 2018. He was a graduate of Dallas Mortuary College and dedicated his life to funeral service. He began his career in Nashville and worked many years in Oxford, retiring from Hernando Funeral Home. A former Lafayette County Coroner, he was one of the first Republicans to be elected in Mississippi after Reconstruction.
Mr. and Mrs. Sutherland had been married 66 years and were members of Parkway Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, at Hernando Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 1 p.m.
Thursday at Hernando Funeral Home Chapel with interment to follow in Oxford Memorial Cemetery. Survivors include their sons Wade Hampton Sutherland II (Ann) of
Oxford, Miss. and Markus Hayden Sutherland (Jerry) of Tampa, Fla., grandson John Lennon Sutherland (Nicole Del Toro) of Cordova, Tenn., and great-grandson William Hampton “Liam” Sutherland of Cordova. They were preceded in death by a grandson, Wade Hampton “Champ” Sutherland III.
