The Lafayette County Board of Supervisors held their first meeting of February last night, where they covered topics ranging from subdivision plats to accepting bids for a new garbage truck.

At the beginning of the meeting, certified planner Mike Slaughter of Slaughter & Associates expressed his thanks to the board for approving the recent zoning ordinance. He also gave some suggestions about the direction the county should go next, based on the county’s comprehensive plan.

“We’ve been focused on this [comprehensive plan] for months now,” Slaughter said. “You may want to consider a sign ordinance. You may want to consider an unkempt properties ordinance. Property maintenance codes and so forth will make Lafayette County even better.”

Other topics discussed at the meeting included the approval of an amended interlocal agreement with the city, county and university for the transportation plan.

“There was initially going to be a separate interlocal agreement between the county and the city, but now the university is added,” county attorney David O’Donnell said.

Board president Jeff Busby went on to explain that the original agreement stated that the city would pay for two-thirds of the public transportation costs, while the county would pay one-third. With last night’s amended agreement, the city, county and university will each pay for one-third of the cost.

The supervisors also accepted bids for a knuckle boom truck and an automated refuse truck.

Another topic of discussion was the request for three speed bumps in the Yocona Ridge subdivision. The Yocona Ridge subdivision consists of 114 homes, and the speed bumps were approved with no opposition.

The last items on the agenda included final approval for phase one of Briarwood subdivision, phase one of Wellington place subdivision and phase seven of Taylor Greene subdivision.

Currently, there are a few broken curbs and storm drains in Taylor Greene, with most in the older phases of the development. The supervisors voted to approve the new phase on the condition that the problems with the curbs and storm drains would be fixed beforehand.

“We met with the homeowners association, and there was one storm drain they were worried might have too much of a throat,” county engineer Larry Britt said. “The homeowners association is concerned that a dog or a child might fall into it.”

Before the supervisors meeting was adjourned, the board was presented with a request that the county take over road maintenance in Stonebridge subdivision. Stonebridge is located immediately to the right of Wellsgate subdivision.

The request was approved, with one dissention from supervisor Chad McLarty.

“If you look at the map of the roads, it’s not something I personally feel that the county should be maintaining,” McLarty said.

The next board of supervisors meeting will be held on Feb. 20 at 8 a.m. at the chancery building.
