If there’s a warrant out for your arrest in Lafayette County, there’s a good chance a deputy will show up with a warrant in hand to escort you to the Lafayette County Detention Center.

What isn’t going to happen, is the sheriff’s department calling you on your phone to inform you of a warrant and ask you to put money on a prepaid debit card to buy your “get out jail free” card.

LCSD Chief Investigator Alan Wilburn said the department has recently received reports of would-be scammers calling Lafayette County residents pretending to be with the LCSD.

The callers are even using names of real employees at the sheriff’s department.

The caller tells the potential scam victim that they have a warrant out for their arrest and that they can get rid of the warrant by purchasing a Money Pak prepaid debit card for a certain amount of money and then give the caller the card information.

“Please don’t send them any money and just hang up the phone,” Wilburn said. “We do not use an automated service, and we would never ask for money over the phone.”

The calls are coming from local numbers, Wilburn said.

“We are not sure how they are getting our names,” he said.
