New business aims to offer something for every Oxonian through yoga

A new yoga studio and boutique in Oxford provides a nurturing space for those new to the practice and seasoned yogis alike.

The Yoga Space, located on Jackson Avenue in the new Uncommon Oxford building across from the James Food Center gas station and post office, also has a boutique at the studio carrying Lululemon and other brands including Yoga Democracy, Little Barn Apothecary organic and vegan skincare products.

It’s all the dream of owner Mary Morgan Bryan, who lives in Oxford and opened the studio early this year with her husband, Joel. Both are natives of Mississippi – Joel is the son of the late Panola County Sheriff David Bryan – who returned to the state after 23 years in Nashville because they believed Oxford was the right spot to open the yoga studio and boutique.

“Yoga has had such a positive impact on my life personally; opening a studio would allow me to share my love of yoga by creating a nurturing space for others to explore yoga and experience the benefits that come from a yoga practice,” Mary Morgan said.

The studio shares the gift of yoga with the community, offers a nurturing and safe space for students to explore yoga and empowers others to live an inspired life, Bryan said. The Yoga Space offers a range of yoga classes from heated power flows to unheated vinyasa flows to restorative, and is well-suited for beginning adults and experienced yogis alike.

“Yoga is meant for everybody,” Bryan said. “Our classes allow students to work at their own level taking modifications and variations suitable for their practice. Ideally, I would love for all of our classes to be made up of both male and female students and all ages; the room being full and everyone comfortable in their space with the students engaging in conversations. I want the Yoga Space to be about a community where each student feels at home.”

The Yoga Space has free parking available in the Uncommon Oxford garage, and there is also some parking available on side streets. The studio is also walking distance or a short bicycle ride from the Oxford Square and the Ole Miss campus.

Bryan said benefits of yoga include increased flexibility and strength, overall mind and body well-being, weight reduction, stress reduction and improved athletic performance. She works as a private instructor with athletes including Ole Miss baseball players and beginning yoga students in addition to classes offered at The Yoga Space.

“Stepping into your first yoga class can be intimidating,” Bryan said. “We tell ourselves ‘I’m too old,’’ I’m not flexible enough,’ ‘I won’t know what I’m doing.’ We can come up with many reasons why we don’t want to try something new,” Bryan said. “However, yoga is a safe place to try on something new. Our yoga classes are a judgment-free zone – that being judgment of both yourself or others.”

The Yoga Space (theyogaspaceoxford.com) is offering a special $30 for 30 days of unlimited yoga in hopes of giving people an affordable way to try the different types of classes offered and to experience the different teachers.

The studio is also offering a donation-only class on Sundays, with all cash donations benefitting a local charity.
