The Oxford Eagle takes home eight Associated Press awards

The Oxford EAGLE won several Louisiana-Mississippi Associated Press Media Editors Awards in a ceremony held Saturday night in New Orleans.

Photographer Bruce Newman led the pack with six awards, including first-place honors in General News and Portrait/Personality photography and second-place wins in Breaking News and Feature Photography.

Newman won both first and second place for Sports Feature Photography.

“The composition of this photo is quite striking, makes me want to learn more about the fire and its impact on the community,” the judges wrote about Newman’s coverage of the fire that destroyed Yellow Leaf Baptist Church’s original sanctuary. “This is the clear winner.”

Former EAGLE reporter Andy Belt won a second-place award in business reporting for his story about Oxford restaurant Tarasque.

“Good read. I want to eat at the restaurant,” the judges wrote.

EAGLE Editor in Chief Alex McDaniel won first place in multimedia reporting for her interactive timeline which detailed the NCAA’s investigation of Ole Miss Athletics from 2012 to 2017.

“Great use of an appealing interactive timeline that breaks down a good amount of information,” the judges wrote.
