Ole Miss lost out on one of its former basketball signees Wednesday.

Florida four-star guard Serrel Smith committed to Maryland on the first day of the spring signing period. Smith revealed his verbal pledge in a video posted to his Twitter account.

The 6-foot-3, 170-pound Smith, who averaged 29 points this past season for St. Petersburg High, originally signed with Ole Miss in the fall but asked for his release once Andy Kennedy resigned as the Rebels’ coach in February. That release was granted by new coach Kermit Davis with Smith announcing in a tweet on March 23 that Ole Miss was still under consideration before Wednesday’s decision.

Maryland later announced Smith had signed with the school.

Ole Miss’ highest-rated signee before his release, Smith is one of two signees that have been released from their scholarship since the coaching change, joining Perry Hall (Baltimore, Maryland ) three-star forward Anthony Higgs. Junior college wing Brian Halums and forward Zach Naylor currently make up the Rebels’ 2018 class.

Ole Miss has four available scholarships for the spring signing period.
