The Mississippi Highway Patrol one fatal wreck on state highways during the Memorial Day weekend.

The two-vehicle wreck occurred at 12:13 p.m. Monday on MS 25 in Louisville after Ida White, 79, of Louisville, crossed the highway and collided with another vehicle. White died while being transported to Winston Medical Hospital.

According to the Mississippi Highway Patrol and local Oxford and Lafayette County law enforcement, there were no reported fatalities over the weekend in Lafayette County.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol concluded its 2018 Memorial Day Travel Enforcement Period along with the “Drive to Survive” safety initiative which began Friday, May 25, at 6 p.m. and ended Monday, May 28 at midnight. Throughout the period, MHP issued 5,921 citations and made 109 DUI arrests.

A total of 156 crashes were investigated and 54 injuries on state, federal highways and interstate systems.

For Troop F, which includes Lafayette County, troopers made 30 arrests for DUI and issued 1,303 citations. They investigated 17 wrecks that resulted in 15 people being injured. Of those wrecks, two were suspected to be alcohol-related.

In Oxford, police officers responded to 13 wrecks and made seven arrests for DUI. Lafayette County Sheriff’s deputies responded to three wrecks and had no DUI arrests.

Results of the “Drive to Survive” campaign showed an increase in seat belt (717) and child restraint (104) citations compared to 191 seat belt and 45 child restraint citations for the same period in 2017. All available troopers were utilized statewide during the period conducting saturation patrols and safety checkpoints.
