The Oxford Police Department is holding its first-ever Youth Law Enforcement Camp this month for teens and young adults ages 14 to 20.

According to organizer Officer Rusty Rasberry, the goal of the camp is two-fold.

“To build relationships with the older youth in our community and to foster an interest in a career in law enforcement,” he said.

Recently, OPD started a new law enforcement Explorer Post last year for youths 14 to 20. Under the umbrella of the Boy Scouts of America, the Post meets twice a month throughout the year.

“We got the Post started and felt now would be a good time for this summer camp, not just for our Post kids but for new kids and if they enjoy the camp and want to get more involved, they can join the Post,” Rasberry said.

OPD has run the Camp Cops for young children for about three years but this is the first time a similar camp is being offered to teens and young adults.

The camp will run for three days – June 12-14. Cost is $20 and lunch and other snacks and drinks will be provided during the day. Registration deadline is June 10.

Rasberry said slots are filling up pretty quickly but that there are still a handful available.

Campers will learn every-day practical skills like minor vehicle maintenance – what to do when you have a flat tire and how to jump-start a car – and basic first aid and CPR. They will learn about DUIs and some defensive tactics, drug identification and get to spend time at the Lafayette County Law Enforcement Firing Range for SWAT demonstrations.

“Our hope is that even those youths who don’t have an interest in pursuing a career in law enforcement will learn a few things and walk away from the camp with some life skills,” Rasberry said.

All sessions will start and end at the Oxford High School.
