SEC presidents and chancellors on Friday reportedly passed legislative proposals that will have an immediate effect on football players transferring within the conference, including former Ole Miss receiver Van Jefferson.

The league will now allow players at a school under NCAA penalties to transfer within the conference and be immediately eligible. The SEC also passed a rule that will allow graduate transfers to transfer within the conference without having to sit out a year, according to The Associated Press. Players previously had to be granted a waiver from the SEC for immediately eligibility in both situations.

The rules were amended at the league’s spring meetings in Destin, Florida.

Jefferson will be an immediate benefactor of the change. The 6-foot-1 receiver spent the last three seasons at Ole Miss, hauling in 42 passes for 456 yards and a touchdown as a redshirt sophomore last season before transferring to Florida. Jefferson still needs clearance from the NCAA, but that seems imminent after six other Ole Miss transfers, including quarterback Shea Patterson, were recently granted waivers by college sports’ governing body to be immediately eligible at their new schools after final penalties were handed down in Ole Miss’ infractions case in December.

Ole Miss was hit with a multi-year ban that will keep the Rebels from going to a bowl next season. The school is in the latter stages of appealing the ban in addition to the finding of a lack of institutional control.
