Lafayette County Fire Station 17, located on Highway 6 East, will be officially opened this week.

At Monday night’s Board of Supervisors meeting, the station was the topic of two points of discussion. First up was a request for final project acceptance from county engineer Larry Britt.

“We got the final payment approved and got that taken care of, but I forgot to ask [the supervisors] to do final acceptance on the project,” Britt said. “We’ve had our inspections, we looked at it. So everything is good, we just need to get this final acceptance done so the fire department can move equipment out there this week.”

The new station is located near County Road 409, near the Highlands and Tuscan Hills subdivisions.

The other point of discussion regarding the fire station was discussion about annexing the area around the station into the Central Grading Fire District. In order to consider the annexation, the supervisors must hold a public hearing, which they scheduled during the July 16 meeting.

Supervisor Kevin Frye said the annexation would be beneficial to residents who live near the station, because it would lower the fire ratings of their homes.

“Hopefully in August or September, annexation will be complete and a whole bunch of new folks, part in District 1 and part in District 2, would have a different fire rating,” Frye said. “I think it would go from 10 to seven, which is pretty significant. It’s exciting for a lot of folks.”
