The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department has launched an open investigation of a Lafayette High School teacher for improper conduct with students.

Chief Investigator Alan Wilburn confirmed the investigation to the EAGLE, saying the department is releasing no further information on the case at this time.

There is an investigation ongoing with a teacher from Lafayette High School,” Wilburn said. “I can’t say any more than that.”

Lafayette County School District Superintendent Adam Pugh also confirmed that the district was aware of an investigation relating to alleged misconduct between a teacher and a student, but said at this point, no one has been suspended or terminated.

“We’re aware there is an investigation, but are waiting until it’s complete to move forward,” Pugh said. “I’m not going to cover up anything. I’m not even going to give the standard answer that it’s a ‘personnel issue.’ When I know more, I won’t hide it from anyone.”

Once the investigation is complete, a probable cause hearing will be held to determine if there is enough evidence to formally press charges.

This is a developing story.
