Tisha Sanders was named the Oxford School District Citizen of the Year during Tuesday’s meeting of the OSD Board of Trustees.

Sanders, who is an employee of the Oxford Housing Authority, was recognized for her efforts to help students living in OHA units succeed in school.

Dr. SuzAnne Liddell, director of federal programs for OSD, said the Citizen of the Year award is determined by a special committee and based on feedback from faculty and staff members. Sanders’ award is something Liddell said she wasn’t surprised about.

““I’ve known Tisha for 10 years. We’ve had a decade with one another, and I believe that she has done so much for the Oxford School District,” Liddell said. “Tisha has coordinated literacy parent nights for students at the OHA conference room in conjunction with early childhood initiatives and promoted school attendance through her work with ‘breakfast at the bus stop.’ She has coordinated with OSD to support parents with technology needs, served on Title I team and has supported registration efforts by the school for years.”

Liddell continued by reading a few comments about Sanders from the selection committee. One committee member wrote that Sanders is “dedicated to her work and how it impacts students. She has a great concern for others, and has partnered with the Oxford School District on numerous occasions.”

It was also said that Sanders possesses qualities of honesty and integrity, and that she makes a positive difference in the community. On a personal level, Sanders said she was honored to receive such a distinction.

“This is really, really special to me, because I come from a family of educators,” Sanders said. “I just want to say thank you for this award. I also want to thank the school district for all it does in conjunction with my role at the housing authority. There are so many programs you guys have initiated, and I want to thank you for that.”
