Miles Miller will eventually get his chance to play college basketball at Ole Miss.

A former standout at Meridian High, Miller tweeted Thursday night he’d committed to Ole Miss, becoming the eighth member of Kermit Davis’ first recruiting class in Oxford. His decision comes nearly three months after the point guard was a victim of a shooting in his hometown.

Miller was an innocent bystander when a shooting broke out at a Waffle House following the Meridian High School prom in April. Miller was shot in his right leg and underwent surgery on a broken bone. Three suspects have been charged in the shooting, according to WTOK-TV.

Miller was committed to Navy after averaging 19 points, four rebounds and five assists during his senior season, but Miller backed off that pledge since the injury wouldn’t allow him to fulfill all of his obligations for the service academy. Miller has been undergoing physical therapy and rehab three days a week this summer as part of his recovery, according to The Meridian Star.

“It’s definitely been a grind, but this physical therapy has helped me a lot,” Miller told the newspaper last month. “I’m a lot further along than we expected me to be, and it’s just been great.”

Miller joins Brian Halums, Zach Naylor, Blake Hinson, KJ Buffen, Franco Miller Jr., Luis Rodriguez and Carlos Curry in Ole Miss’ incoming class, though he’s expected to redshirt before being eligible for the 2019-20 season.
