Jane McCurdy Massey

A private family graveside service will be held for Jane McCurdy Massey, 79, of Bay Springs, who passed away peacefully in her home on Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2018, after a brief struggle with cancer.

Interment will be in the Bay Springs City Cemetery. Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Bay Springs will be in charge of the arrangements.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 10, 2018, at the Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Bay Springs. Pallbearers will be Eddie Barnett, Wayne Buffington, Jody Fail, Eric McCormick, Joe McNeil, Johnny Crosby, Anthony Sims, Sam Sumrall, Robert Scoggins and Mike McNeil.

Jane was born on Aug. 5, 1939, in Memphis, Tenn. to Herbert and Mabel Mabry Titche. She graduated from Sardis High School in 1957 and from Mississippi State College for Women in 1960.  Jane taught school for 38 years at Sylva Bay Academy in Bay Springs. She was named Star Teacher 11 times throughout her career and was inducted into the Mississippi Economic Council’s Hall of Fame for Star Teachers.

Jane was an avid bridge player, tennis player, gardener and golfer.

She married her first husband, J.W. McCurdy of Batesville, Miss. in 1960. He passed away from cancer at the early age of 43, and after remaining single for the next 31 years, she found and married the second love of her life, Fred Allen Massey of Gadsden, Ala. in April 2010.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert and Mabel Mabry Titche and her first husband, J.W. McCurdy.

Survivors include her husband, Fred Allen Massey of Bay Springs; one son, John McCurdy, and his wife, Betsy of Oxford; one daughter, Martha McCurdy of Indianapolis, Ind.; six grandchildren, J.W. McCurdy (Megan) and Meg McCurdy, both of Oxford, and Josh, Mia, Mabry and Joy, all of Indianapolis and one great-grandson, Will McCurdy of Oxford.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be in her memory to the Bay Springs Country Club, 49 County Road 186, Louin, MS, 39388 or to the Sylva Bay Academy, 17 MS-531, Bay Springs, MS, 39422.
